The Interdisciplinary Arts Practices MA programmes are located within the Department of Arts between the fields of Fine Art and Music. The Department is situated within the School of Arts and Humanities known nationally and internationally for the strength of its research culture.
The programmes comprise four taught postgraduate courses for visual-artists, composers and interdisciplinary practitioners. PDF brochures for download:
- MA in Composition and Sonic Art
- MA in Contemporary Arts
- MA in Contemporary Arts and Music
- MA in Social Sculpture
These courses locate creative practice in an interdisciplinary context and have been designed for visual and sonic artists, composers and musicians working in a broad spectrum of media. They are of particular relevance to students wishing to expand the scope of their creative practices by questioning boundaries, initiating shifts in perception, and embarking on work relevant to contemporary life. A concern for location, context and audience is a central aspect of the program.
The research strengths of the course team in collaborative practices; techniques of contemporary composition; the initiation of cross-art form dialogues; site and context-based work; Social Sculpture; socially engaged practice; and sound art are directly mapped onto the module content.

Funding opportunities
AHRC: The Arts and Humanities Research Council provides funding for courses in Arts and Humanities to Home/EU applicants. The School has a good record of success with applications to AHRC, but you should remember that the AHRC has a limited pot of money that they share out across the country. Things to note about the AHRC:
- If you wish to apply for an AHRC award you must first discuss this with the Postgraduate Administrator for Arts as you will need full support from the School.
- We would recommend that you make the application under the AHRC’s ‘Research Preparation’ scheme.
- You must already have been offered a place on a postgraduate course before you can apply for AHRC funding.
- You must be a UK or EU citizen.
Application forms can be downloaded from www.ahrc.ac.uk

Entry requirements:
If your first language is not English then you will need to indicate the level of your English language skills. The easiest way to do this is to take a recognised English language test. Oxford Brookes University recognises a number of different English language tests, and provides information about the level required for each one. This information is available on the School website.
