Poets in Oxford
Oxford has a vibrant poetry scene, in which individual poets and groups can be found reading or performing at all kinds of venues all over the city nearly every week; have a look at our venues page for more details. Local voices include the Back Room Poets, the New Libertines, Eightcuts, the Jericho Poets, The Poetry Society’s Stanza and Stanza 2, with each group encompassing poets of various natures and styles. Many of Oxford’s poets also publish online, in magazines, and in anthologies, and some are continually publishing books of their work. Many of the poets who nurture their talent in Oxford read or perform at festivals all over the country. Whatever your poetic taste, and whether you prefer poems in print, voiced by their authors, or performed with body and soul, there is much in Oxford to enjoy!
The Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre acts as a hub for news, and publicity about events, for the local performance poetry scene in the city and beyond. The website also hosts information about local poets through poets’ pages, many of which include images and performances via sound and/or video. The Centre profiles a new group of writers every six months.
