Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History

Personal Profile

After studying at the University of Tübingen and the University of East Anglia, Dillinger joined the doctoral research seminar‚ Western Europe in Comparative Perspective’ at the University of Trier in 1995. He finished his PhD thesis, a comparative study of 1300 witch-trials in two German principalities in 1998. The book won the Friedrich Spee Award for outstanding contributions to the historiography of witchcraft and the prize for the best dissertation of Trier University. An English translation is forthcoming. In 1998 Johannes Dillinger joined the staff of the University of Trier. In 2000 and 2001 he worked as a visiting scholar at the German Historical Institute Washington and Georgetown University, and received the prestigious Emmy Noether Grant of the German Research Association. This grant enabled him to found an independent junior research group. From 2002 till 2006, Johannes Dillinger worked with several doctoral students on a major comparative study of the political representation of the peasantry in colonial New England and early modern Europe.

Dillinger is currently working on two major projects: a history of magical treasure hunting that combines legal and cultural history and a survey on terrorism from the 14th century to the present. In addition to that, he works on problems of the constitutional history of territories on the Slesvig-Holstein seaboard in the early modern period.
